On 30 April 1982, Bakshiganj police station was established with seven unions. Bakshiganj thana was upgraded to "Bakshiganj upazila" on 14 September 1983. Bakshiganj municipality has been improved on 05 February 2013 with 20.80 sq km.

Bakshiganj is an ancient and historic township. But there are many differences in nomination of Bakshiganj. But Bakshiganj is the original name Rajendraganj. Rajendarganj mouja still in the documentary In an article titled 'Bakhshiganj', in a journal named Smaranicker, 44-45, it is mentioned in the writings of Professor Afsar Ali. Some say that there was a Muslim fakir named "Bakshi" here hundreds of years ago. A digging or asteroids are built around him. This place comes from a hat and a hat. The name is named Bakshir Hat. In the evolution of time, from Bakshir hat, it is now known as "Bakshiganj".
